pots on roof lines, bottles half full of water tied to pillars, or outside the entry door and single bottles hung in fruit trees ... why?

They do the water bottle thing here in Japan as well. It is meant to deter cats and birds from congregating as somehow it frightens them.
I too am frightened by congregations of cats with birds or even, congregations of cats with dogs, or worse, Congregationalists congregating with Unitarians - water bottles all around!
Also google "bottle trees" which I havent gotten to blogging yet.
